1. Scope

1.1 This specification covers seamless and welded black and hot-dipped galvanized steel pipe in NPS 18 to NPS 26 [DN6 to DN 650]

3. Ordering Information

3.1 Information items to be considered, if appropriate, for inclusion in the purchase order are as follows:

3.1.1 Specification designation (A 53 or A 53M, including year-date),

3.1.2 Quantity (feet, metres, or number of lengths),

3.1.3 Grade (A or B),

3.1.4 Type (F, E, or S; see 1.2),

4. Materials and Manufacture

4.1 The steel for both seamless and welded pipe shall be made by one or more of the following processes: open-hearth,electric-furnace, or basic-oxygen.

4.2 If steels of different grades are sequentially strand cast,identification of the resultant transition material is required.

The steel producer shall remove the transition material by any established procedure that positively separates the grades.

4.3 The weld seam of electric-resistance welded pipe in Grade B shall be heat treated after welding to a minimum of 1000 °F [540 °C] so that no untempered martensite remains, or

otherwise processed in such a manner that no untempered martensite remains.

4.4 When pipe is cold expanded, the amount of expansion shall not exceed 112 % of the specified outside diameter of the pipe.

5. General Requirements

5.1 Material furnished under this specification shall conform to the applicable requirements of the current edition of Specification A 999/A 999M unless otherwise provided herein.

5.2 Heat Treatment:

5.2.1 All pipe shall be furnished in the heattreated conditionin accordance with the requirements of Table 2. Theheattreatment procedure, except for H grades, S30815,

S31035, S31272, S31254, S32654, N08367, N08904, N08925,and N08926 shall consist of heating the pipe to a minimumtemperature of 1900 °F [1040 °C] and quenching in water or

rapidly cooling by other means.
